Essex Police launch murder probe after man shot and woman stabbed in Wickford

By Charles Thomson in Crime

DETECTIVES at Essex Police have launched a murder investigation after a man was killed in Wickford.

The man, aged 45, was shot to death in Cranfield Park Avenue yesterday evening.

Police said they found the man, who was at that time still alive, after being called to the scene at around 9.45am by the ambulance service.

They also found a woman, 35, who had suffered multiple stab wounds.

The two victims were taken to hospital, where the man died but the woman is reported to be in a ’serious but stabled condition’.

The announcement of the murder probe comes hours after people in A&E at Basildon Hospital reported on social media that the department was put on ’lockdown’ by armed police last night.

A police helicopter was seen hovering low over the Pound Lane and Burnt Mills area in the early hours, then close to Basildon Hospital.

Yazmin Dole wrote on Facebook group Crimewatch Basildon: "Just drove past and there’s police parked everywhere near the hospital and loads driving round."

Tanya Stanley wrote on Facebook group "I’ve been up hospital since half-ten. Have been on lockdown and police in every doorway."

Another user, Jay Abbot, wrote that he had seen three police cars, an ambulance and paramedics at Alton Garden Centre - close to Cranfield Park Road, followed by ’choppers with search lights’.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing. Detectives are asking witnesses who have yet to come forward to contact Brentwood Major Investigation Team."
